Abstract

23,823. SalwÚn, A. E. Nov. 23. Magnetic separators.--In a form of magnetic separator shown in Fig. 1, a set or sets of magnet poles 1, 2 are arranged opposite each other, and between them are two parallel non- magnetic plates 3, 4, separated by one or more cross-walls 5. The polarity of the pole or poles 1 is of opposite kind to that of the pole or poles 2. Either the plates 3, 4 or the poles are put in motion, and, when ores are fed into the space between the plates, the non-magnetic portions fall straight through, but the magnetic portions are retained until they are pushed out of the range of the magnetic field by means of the cross-walls 5. When the plates 3, 4 are thick, wires or plates of iron or other material may be inserted in transverse apertures in the plates. In a modification, the plates 3, 4 may be concentric cylinders. In another form, shown in Fig. 4, the plates 3, 4 are concentric conical shells, and the pole-pieces 1, 2 are radial arms inclined similarly to the plates 3, 4. The polepieces 1 are secured to or formed in one with a nave 7 mounted loosely on a fixed shaft 8 of magnetic material, and the pieces 2 are fixed to, or in a piece with, a nave 10 loosely mounted on the shaft. The lower part of the shaft 8 is hollow, and communicates with the space between the plates 3, 4 by means of two channels 16, 17, near the upper ends of which are two crosswalls serving to direct the magnetic material into the channels. The non-magnetic material falls into an annular channel 20. In a second form of magnetic separator, shown in Fig. 7, pole-pieces 1, 2 are secured to discs 21, 22, fixed to a rotary shaft 23 which may be of magnetic material. The plates 3, 4 form the sides of a water-tight vessel through which the shaft and magnet coils 13 pass.
