Abstract

22,548. Lloyd, W. J., and Priest, W. Nov. 8. Tricycles; bicycles; steering-mechanism.-Relates to means for tilting the frame and wheels of a motor or other tricycle or other velocipede. The Figures show the application to a front-steering motor tricycle, which can be converted into a motor bicycle by replacing the tricycle steering-mechanism by the usual steering-mechanism of a bicycle. The two steering-wheels a are mounted on axles a<2> secured to vertical spindles c, mounted in ball bearings in sockets d connected by parallel links e to slightly-inclined lugs C', formed on a cross-tube C secured by tubes B<2> to a tube B rigidly secured by a screw nut in the head A' and connected by an inclined tube and clip, not shown, to the bottom tube. The steering-post is connected by a doublehinge universal joint h to a cross-bar g secured, by pins i having ball joints on their lower ends, to links f having hinge joints f<2> and connecting crossbars c<1> formed on the spindles c. Rollers k carried by the lugs C' engage cam plates c' secured to the ends of the spindles c and shaped so that, when the links f are actuated by the steering-post so as to turn the wheels, one lug C<2> is raised and brought nearer to its socket d, and the other lowered and pushed away from its socket d, thus inclining the frame and wheels of the cycle towards, and bring- ing the weight of the cycle nearer to, the inside of the curved path of the cycle. The cams c' and rollers k may be replaced by a link f shown in dotted lines, and connecting the cross-bar g with arms formed on the links e. In this form, the rear link f is provided with springs to obviate strains.
