Abstract

21,803. Carter, J. E., and Wright, S. A. Oct. 30. Sawing; saws, sharpening; centering work.-A machine for sawing or cutting iron bars and centering the same has a hollow spindle 3, Figs. 2 and 3, with self-centering chucks 5, 6 to hold the bar 4, which is rotated in the opposite direction to the saw or cutter 9. The saw is mounted on a saddle 41, the feed of which is gradually increased, together with the speed of the bar, as the saw cuts through the work. A sharpening-worm 93, Fig. 11, is carried by the saddle and driven at a speed to suit the saw to sharpen the teeth whilst at work. The Provisional Specification states that the leading part of the worm may be in the form of a steel cutter to clear away cuttings, while the remainder is of emery or other sharpening-material. The main shaft 35 drives a cross-shaft 37 connected by worm gearing 10 to the saw spindle and by bevel gearing 43, 46 and an inclined shaft 45 to a shaft carrying one of a pair of belt cones 30, 31. The second cone 31 drives a vertical shaft 50 connected to a worm shaft 53 for driving the spindle 3, and to a cone shaft 12 for driving a back shaft 11 connected by clutches to a screw 27 for traversing the saddle and to a screw 33 for traversing the belt-shifter for the cones 30, 31. After the saddle has moved sufficiently to cut off the bar, a stop 68 operates a pin 69 to release one end of the shaft 11, allowing it to fall out of engagement and stop the traverse of the saddle and belt-shifter, which are returned separately or together by turning a hand-wheel. A shaft 76 driven from the main shaft, and driving a centering-tool 89, is then raised by a handle 86 and locked in the centering position on a quadrant plate by a handle 87, the drill being then pressed forward by a handle 90 to centre the work. The sharpening-worm may be applied to other metalworking machines in which a saw or cutter is employed.
