Abstract

17,208. Pryor, H. A., [De Ploeg, H., Colliez, Loustau, & Cie.]. Aug. 27. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to speed changing and reversing gear for motor road vehicles, and consists especially of the means for shifting the pinions for effecting the changes in speed and for reversing. The three pinions 8, 9, 10 are made capable of sliding on the hexagonal driving-shaft 11, so as to drive one or other of the three wheels 5, 6, 7 on the driven shaft, to give three forward speeds, or to drive the wheel 4, to reverse. The pinions are slid on their shaft by bent levers 13 fulcrummed at 16 and acted on by cam-shaped grooves 18 in a rotary cam 17, which can be adjusted by the vehicle controlling-apparatus. The cam-grooves 18 are so shaped as to give a compulsory movement to the levers 13 in one direction only, viz., that by which disengagement of the gear is effected. Movement in the opposite direction, by which one or other of the pairs of wheels is made to engage, is effected by springs 15 mounted on a bar 28. These springs, of which there are three, abut against fixed washers 30, and sliding washers 29, between which latter project on one side fingers on the levers 13 and on the other side the fingers of a pair of levers 14. The levers 14 are operated by cam-shaped grooves 19 in the cam 17 so as to act on the levers 13 for effecting the engagement of the gear through the medium of the springs. The whole of the gearing is enclosed in a case 3 which supports the cam 17 and bar 28.
