Abstract

14,142. Maginnis, J. P. July 11. Fastenings; locks, key.-Relates to fastening- devices for baskets, boxes, bags, &c. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a hollow locking-bar a, which is threaded through the staples l, has two wings or arms d pivoted thereto. These arms are acted upon by a spring-controlled rod e sliding within the bar. The wings are forced within the bar, when it is being passed through the staples, and are then expanded by means of the springs. When in the expanded position, the rod e may be secured by means of the bolt c of a lock b on the end of the bar. The spring may be dispensed with, and the rod e connected to the wings and formed integral with the bolt of the lock. In another arrangement, a bell-crank tumbler is pivoted in the bar, one arm of which tumbler falls to secure the bar after it has been threaded through the staples. The bolt of a lock engages the other arm to prevent operation of the tumbler, thereby securing the bar in position. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, a padlock b is formed integral with the locking-bar a. The bow d of the padlock is adapted to embrace a loop or staple l, and is there secured by the bolt c. In another device, shown in Fig. 5, the locking-bar is made in two telescopic parts a<1>, a, each provided with arms d. The part a is provided with notches k for the engagement of the bolt of a lock b secured to the part a<1>. The parts are contracted to allow of insertion into the staples, and are then expanded until the arms d come against the staple, in which position they are locked by the engagement of the lock bolt with the notches k. A spring may be provided for forcing apart tha parts, and a stop may prevent the entire withdrawal of the part a. In another arrangement, the locking-bar is of U-shape, and forms the bow of a padlock.
