Combing - machines. - In Heilmann combing- machines, the nippers p<2>, p<3>, feed-roller F, and top comb C are carried by an oscillating frame N, which is operated through the link N<2> and arm W<5> from a cam or crank-pin on the shaft A<1>, and is caused to move towards the detaching-rollers simultaneously with the feeding movement of the roller F, the downward movement of the comb C, and the forward rotation of the detaching-rollers. The lower jaw p<2> is carried by an adjustable crossbar B on the frame N, and supports the feed-roller F, which is pressed upon the face of the jaw p<2> by the spring levers f and is rotated intermittently by the ratchet and pawl arrangement f L, L<1> at each reciprocation of the nippers. The upper jaw p<3> is carried by the spring levers N<3>, which are operated so as to open and close the nippers during the reciprocation thereof by means of an adjustable stop I, which is engaged by the bowls N<5> on the levers N<3>. The top comb C is secured to a bar C<1> adjustably mounted on levers, the vertical movements of which are regulated by an adjustable or cam-operated incline G, the lower limit of movement being further determined, if desired, by an adjustable set-screw passing through a projection C<5> and engaging with the frame N. The segment S of the comb cylinder is made longer than usual, and the cam for raising and lowering the detaching-roller d<2> is so modified as to give the roller a longer dwell than usual in its lowest position, the means for driving the detaching- rollers being so modified that they will continue in rotation for a longer time than is usually the case.
