Abstract

9475. Caskey, S. S. May 7. Punching; riveting.-A fluidpressure tool for punching and riveting has a cylinder 9 to which is attached a framing 43 with a cylinder 50, in which is a spring-returned plunger 54 carrying the tool 55. A spherical piston 29 in the cylinder 9 is packed to slide over a fixed hollow rod 35, communicating, in the position shown, between the interior of the piston 29 and the upper side of the plunger 54 through a passage 44. The piston has a hollow tail rod 24, packed to slide in an extension on the cylinder 9, and grooved at 34 to work fluid-tight over the rod 35 as the piston moves forward. Ports 5, 12 at opposite ends of the cylinder communicate with a divided tube 7, on which is a valve sleeve 18, having a passage 16 connecting opposite ends of the cylinder as shown, and an exhaust passage 22 which can be turned to communicate with the passage 12 and allow exhaust to take place from that end of the cylinder. The piston is filled with a suitable fluid and pressure admitted by the passage 1, which is constantly open. The valve sleeve is turned to allow the right end of the cylinder to exhaust, the piston then moving over the rod 35 and causing the whole of the piston pressure to be transmitted through this rod to operate the tool. On turning the valve sleeve back to the position shown, the exhaust is shut off, communication is made between opposite ends of the cylinder and the piston is returned owing to its differential area.
