8695. Binks, C. April 27. Clutches are arranged so that a chain - wheel o f small diameter may be used. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2. the chainwheel B is supported by balls E carried between races B<1> formed on the wheel, and on collars F and F<1>, one of which F is secured rigidly to the hub, and the other F<1> adjustably secured by a locknut to the hub. The hub is formed with sockets to receive semicircular pawls G, which tend to fall out of the sockets against teeth B<3> formed on the chain-wheel B, so as to secure the parts together during forward rotation, but to permit free-wheel action. In a modification, the pawls G are replaced by balls which are carried in radial sockets. Springs may be used to press the pawls or balls out of their sockets.
