Abstract

5515. Shuman, F. March 15. Alarms, fire; fire-extinguishing by gases. -Relates to an automatic appliance for extinguishing fire in tanks containing inflammable liquids, such as petroleum. A weight C is suspended by a fusible wire above the surface of the liquid. At the bottom of the tank is a layer of a solution of a carbonate. In a tink B<1> with thin sides, capable of being easily perforated, is contained a charge of an acid, such as sulphuric acid. In case of a fire at the surface of the liquid, the suspending-wire is fused, and the weight C falls on the tank B<1>, breaks through its sides, and allows the acid to mix with the solution of carbonate. The carbonic-acid gas generated rises to the surface and extinguishes the fire. Instead of the weight C, au explosive cartridge may be used, which, on a wire being fused, projects a bullet through the sides of the tank B<1> and at the same time gives an alarm by its explosion.
