Abstract

4809. Jacobs, E. S. March 6. Sounding - apparatus. - The lead-line o, which trails on the bottom, is attached to a linked parallelogram mounted on a frame b free to oscillate on trunnions t in a frame a. The frame b is kept vertical, during the rolling of the ship, by a weight c. Attached to the arm e is a quadrant k, to one end of which a cord l is attached. This cord passes over a pulley m to a roller n, to which it is attached. A pointer q on the axle of the roller indicates on a dial the varying angle which the lead-line makes with the horizontal, and thus the depth. By fitting a contact to the frame and an adjustable one to the quadrant, a circuit may be completed to give a signal when a certain depth is reached.
