4121. Roberts, J. Feb. 26. Calculating- a p p a - ratus.-Relates to an apparatus attached to or separate from a gas meter, to show readily the cost of the gas consumed. The meter a has the usual counting-dials b, c, d, and, in the example shown, the price-indicating device is attached to the meter. It consists of a casing f having three slots or openings g, h, i, within which rollers k, l, m can be rotated by turning the handles q. Each roller has four spaces, No. 1 indicating the numeral shown by the pointer of the corresponding dial, namely, the numeral on roller k agreeing with that on dial b, that on l with c, and that on m with d, while Nos. 2, 3, and 4 indicate the cost in pounds, shillings, and pence respectively of the number of cubic feet indicated by the numeral in No. 1 of the same roller. Thus, 9 on k represents 90,000 cubic feet, the cost of which at 2s. 6d. per thousand is ú 11 5s. ; 6 on l represents 6000 cubic feet, the cost of which is 15s., and 4 on m represents 400 cubic feet, the cost of which is ls. The rollers k, l, m may be connected by bevel or other gearing to the spindles of the corresponding dials so that the former shall be operated by the latter. Fig. 2 shows bevel gearing s, s<1>, s', t, t<1>, t<2>, u for connecting the spindle r with the roller k. An opening displays two noughts indicating tens and hundreds of cubic feet.
