Abstract

1703. Bennett, F. M., and Fowler, J. O. Jan. 24. Gas and vapour burners.-Relates to argand burners using hydrocarbon vapours or gases for the production of heat, with or without light according to the air supply, and for producing light as a result of combustion, incandescence, or both. The air and gas or vapour are first heated separately in proper proportions, and then mixed at the points of ignition, and air is also thrown internally and externally against the column of flame. An incandescent burner is shown. Gas enters through a cock L into several pipes or passages A, in which it is heated. The passages lead into a chamber I provided with small orifices I', through which the gas escapes, preferably at an angle to receive a gyratory motion. The chamber I is contained in an air chamber E, preferably fitted with stationary air deflectors e<2>, e<3>, similar to propeller blades, to give the air a gyratory motion. The air enters the chamber E through two sets of holes formed in a chimney holder B and controlled by a valve plate M fitted with a pin or handle B<1>. The chamber E is formed by a cap C which rises from the plate B and is sometimes provided with perforations C'. An air-beating chamber C<13> is formed by perforated ledges C<11> and C<12> and an annular flange C<10> formed with a central opening for the burner. The parts C<12>, C", C<10> also serve to deflect air on to the flame. A solid or tubular stem G, which may serve to heat air, gas, or both, is constructed of refractory material and mounted on or connected to the plate M, and may carry a deflector H, preferably in the form of an inverted cone. An extension J of the stem G is surrounded by a refractory cylinder R<8> faced with highly-refractory material, and a flared end J<1> carries a head K of highly-refractory material. A chimney A', preferably with a step or ledge, is supported on the holder B, and another chimney A<8> is supported on a holder A<10>. The air supply is preliminarily heated between the chimneys. In a modification, the parts are shaped to form a flat or oblong burner.
