Abstract
1660. Giess, J. H. Jan. 24. Chairs.-Relates to an arm or easy chair having an adjustable back, leg. rest, and footboard. The back is carried on curved arms b, fixed to levers d, pivoted at c. Links k connect the levers d to other pivoted levers l, which are connected by links m to the leg-rest n. The leg-rest has pivots V, which can slide in slits W. The footboard 2 is carried on rods 8, which slide in guides 7 on the leg-rest. The rods 8 are connected by links 6 to arms on a shaft 4 carried in bearings on the underside of the leg-rest. On the shaft 4 is an arm 9 connected by a link 10 to a lever 15, which cannot move further forward than the position shown. In the normal or sitting position, shown in dotted lines, the leg-rest is some distance behind the front edge of the seat, and the back is some distance forward of the back edge of the seat. The parts are locked in position by a pivoted rack bar p engaging a fixed pin. By turning a shaft t, by a suitable handle, against the action of a spring y, the rack bar can be disengaged to permit of the back being lowered. As the back moves down, the leg-rest is moved forwards to the position shown in full lines ; further motion causes the footboard to be pushed out. The back is pivoted at o, and its inclination can be adjusted independently ; it is provided with a notched quadrant and spring pawl locking- arrangement.
