Abstract

1365. Thompson, W. P., [Fraisher, R. L.]. Jan. 21. Teaching music.- The invention consists of a board s having five long lines h upon it to represent the lines of the stave, and shorter ones i to represent leger lines. One edge of the board has a number of holes k corresponding to the notes of the chromatic scale, the parts of the board adjacent to the holes corresponding to black keys being shaded. The holes are shaped as shown in Fig. 4, so as to receive pegs m which are partly round and partly square in section. The square ends of the pegs fit into other boards, one of which is shown at t, having holes corresponding only to the major scale, the chromatic scale, or the scale in one of the minor modes, and the board t is secured to the board s by clips p, r. The pegs thus show the notes of any scale whatever by selecting the proper board t and placing it in its proper position against the board s. The boards are marked with their staff and tonic sol fa names, and with numbers to indicate their positions in their scales, the relative number of vibrations in them, and the number of vibrations per second in middle C according to the pitch employed.
