Sewage and foul waters, treating ; bacteriological processes; tanks.-Relates to siphonic discharge apparatus for use in connection with bacterial filter beds, sewers, and for other purposes. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 2, the siphon a discharges into a trap g, provided with a weir d, the upper level of which is just below the level of the extremity h of the siphon. The weir may be provided with an outlet in the form of a V-shaped notch. In another form of siphonic apparatus, the discharge pipe d, Fig. 6, of the siphon a extends above the level of the intake c, and an auxiliary discharge pipe i is fitted to the pipe d. For the purpose of interrupting the action of the siphon, when the level falls in trap g, and of re-starting it when the level rises in the siphon chamber, an air pipe l may be fitted to the siphon. The siphon may discharge the liquid into a channel provided with an adjustable sluice for controlling the action of the siphon. A siphonic apparatus for filter beds or tanks comprises a siphon of the kind shown in Fig. 6, but provided with a bent pipe or overdraw arm, which discharges liquid through the siphon from a compartment separated from the filtering-media by a perforated partition.
