Abstract

456. Shaw, S. H., and Toplis, W. G. Jan. 8. Inking-apparatus.-Relates to the inking-apparatus of jobbing platen presses, and consists of means for lifting one or more of the inking- rollers clear of the forme during their forward or downward movement, and allowing them to run upon the forme in their return movement, to obtain a more even inking of the forme. Fig. 2 shows the inking-rollers 4 in their downward movement, and Fig. 3 in their upward movement. The truck rollers 7 run free of the rollers 4 upon the spindles 8. On each truck roller 7 of the two upper rollers is a boss 9, Figs. 4 and 5, on which is journalled a sleeve 10 provided with a cam 11 carrying a part consisting of a roller 12 projecting over the roller 7. The boss 9 has an inclined groove 13, in which is a ball 14 pressed by a spring 15. The truck rollers 7 run upon the tracks 16, and in the downward movement those of the upper rollers rotate in the direction of the arrow a in Fig. 5, the ball 14 engaging and rotating the cam sleeve 10, until the roller 12 thereon engages the rail 16 and lifts the rollers as shown in Fig. 2. In this position the camsleeve 10 is stopped by a pin 17 thereon engaging the hook of the roller arm or other suitable part. In the upward movement the truck rollers 7 run on the tracks 16 rotating free of the cam sleeves 10, with the upper rollers 4 in contact with the forme, as shown in Fig. 3. The cam rollers 12 may each be provided with a ratchet 23 engaged by a spring pawl 24 to prevent the roller from turning in one direction and to ensure the movement of the cam 11 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3. If desired, the lower rollers 4 may be provided with a set of cam devices, operating in the reverse direction to those of the upper rollers, so that the lower rollers will be lifted during the upward movement.
