Abstract

16,173. Armstrong, R. B., and Day, A. J. Sept. 11. Water-tube boilers.-Straight, or slightly-curved, water tubes are arranged to cross one another as shown, being either connected in groups to separate top and bottom water drums 2 and 3 as shown in Fig. 1, or to horizontal drums 2*, 3*, as shown in Fig. 5 ; the drums, in the latter case, extend from back to front. A steam drum 4 communicates with the upper water drums. Partitions 6 rest on the tubes, and divide the furnace 7 from the side flues 8, 8, and the latter from an upper flue 9. The gases from the rear of the furnace pass forward through the flues 8 and back again through the flue 9. Downcomers 18, connect each upper drum with one or both of the adjacent lower drums on the same side, and into the upper ends of these downcomers the feedwater is supplied at 27. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, smaller tubes serve as downcomers.
