Abstract
15,325. Metcalf, A., and Sumner, C. J. Aug. 28. Processes; flyer, ring and traveller, &c. frames ; winding machines; bobbins.-Fleece or slivers from a lap a or from cans &c. are fed to a toothed drum b, which is divided into sections by rings b<2> extending just above the points of the teeth and arranged to clear the lower edges of partitions c<1> forming the sides of funnels, the remainder of the cylinder being enclosed in a casing h<1>, which may be arranged so as partially to enclose the feed cylinder a<3>. The fibres which are taken from the lap &c. by the toothed drum are thrown by the latter into the funnels and carried by the air current generated by the revolution of the drum against conical and rotating spindles d, which may be roughened or provided at their ends with twisted points or prongs d'. The fibre is drawn from the spindles d by rollers f, f<1> and passed over a counterfaller wire or arm h<1> and a winding-faller h<4> and wound on to the bobbins g<1> on the spindles g. The upper roller of each set of drawing-rollers may be made conical at one end to facilitate the placing of the threads between them. The bobbin g<1> is made of thin sheet metal and rests on a friction disc g<5> on the spindle. The material may be passed through drawing-rollers before it is supplied to the drum b, and after the thread is formed and drawn it may be passed to an ordinary spinning-spindle of the ring and traveller, flyer, or other suitable type, or be wound into bobbins or balls by means of an arrangement analogous to that used in an ordinary drum winding machine. The spindle d may be arranged in a horizontal, vertical, or other suitable position, and it is preferably enclosed in a hinged box or casing e, formed partly of perforated material for the admission of air during the twisting operation. The winding-faller h' or the ordinary copping-rail is operated for the purpose of winding- on through a vertical rod j, which rests at its lower end on a pair of levers k carried by a horizontally-reciprocated slide k<4>. The levers k are pivoted together at one end, and at their other ends are provided with studs, which engage in curved slots k<3> in upwardly-projecting portions of the slide k' and also rest upon inclined or curved shaper plates k<6>, which are moved intermittently upon the slide k', so as to raise the levers k as the winding proceeds, by means of a screw and ratchet arrangement k<7>, k<8>.
