Abstract

11,850. Drake, A. J. June 30. Motor road vehicles. - Relates to brakes for motor cars and other machinery, the objects being (1) to make the brake equally effective against motion in either direction, and (2) to relieve the driver from the strain of holding the brake on. Fig. 1 shows one form of the invention. In this the ends of the brake strap 8 are crossed over and attached to the ends of a pair of floating Jinks 13, 16 working in slots in a fixed bracket 5. The brake may be applied by means of the pull-rod 14 acting in opposition to a spring 18, which tends to keep the brakes off. In order to relieve the driver from the strain of attending to the brakes after putting them on, in the case of machinery driven by an explosion engine, a piston and cylinder 31, 32 are provided for actuating the lever 13 by means of the engine exhaust. A portion of the exhaust gases can be admitted to either end of the cylinder by a three-way or other tap 34. In another form, a bent lever is used instead of the straight link 13, so as to avoid the crossing of the ends of the brake strap ; and another modification is shown in which the linkage is arranged so as not to be affected by the play of the vehicle on its springs. Another modification is shown in elevation in Fig. 6 and in plan in Fig. 7. In this the crossed ends of the brake strap are attached to studs 9, 10 capable of sliding in slots in a bracket 5 and connected by the linkage 24, 25, 26, which can be operated by the pull-rod 14.
