Abstract

8827. Butler, H. W. May 12. Primary batteries. -Relates to batteries in which the active electrolyte and the depolarizer are employed in the form of paste or semi-liquid, and has for its object to increase the output or capacity of these batteries and prevent their deterioration when not in use. This is effected by introducing into the paste a porous material such as hemp, cotton, or asbestos. This material may, as shown in horizontal section in Fig. 2, be applied in the form of vertical wicks E inserted at or near the junction of the depolarizing-mixture C with the active electrolyte mixture B, and they may be placed into small grooves in the edges of the carbon plate D. The battery shown is of the LeclanchÚ type, A being the zinc electrode. Figs. 5 and 6 show horizontal sections of modifications. In Fig. 6, the wicks E may be inserted at the same time with, and on the face of, the plunger or mould, which is used to shape the " white mixture " B in the case.
