Abstract

5128. Serpollet, L. Sept. 6, A.D. 1899, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Valves and valve gear. -Relates to multiplecylinder single - acting high-speed engines, in which each cylinder has separate admission and exhaust beat valves. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of the engine partly in section, and Fig. 4 a sectional plan passing through the valves. The valves are normally closed by the steam pressure, assisted by springs, and are opened in proper succession by sliding rods T acted on by a centrally-situated multiple cam. Each rod carries a roller bearing against the cam, and is adjustable to take up wear. The cam is carried by a square shaft 0 driven from the crank shaft by toothed wheels P, Q. This shaft with the cam can be shifted longitudinally so as to bring different portions of the cam into action for the purpose of starting, stopping, and reversing the engine. The grade of expansion and compression can be altered by adjusting the wheels P and Q as regards their angular relation to each other.
