Abstract

3726. Samson, C. Feb. 26. Water - tube boilers.- Fig. 2 shows a transverse section, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal section. A flattened water chamber a, extending above the fire-grate, is connected by vertical water tubes with a flattened steam and water chamber c above, these chambers and tubes being so arranged in combination with a baffle l that the flame and products of combustion take the course indicated by arrows, passing twice across among the tubes. The water chamber a extends through the casing at back and front, where it is fitted with doors h, h. Some of the tubes at the back are enlarged to act as downcomers. A mud collector q, Fig. 4, is placed behind the boiler and connected by two or three tubes with the water chamber. The feedwater is introduced into one of these connections, downwards as shown when there are two, and upwards in the middle connection when there are three. Air is supplied to the furnace above the grate, for smoke-consuming purposes, by perforations u controlled by external slides w. The last feature is not, however, claimed.
