Abstract

181. Lane, T. E. Jan. 3. Emptying bottles; bottles; bottle holders. -The bottle g has an outlet at the bottom which receives a tapered cork or plug f. The bottom is raised round the outlet to retain sediment, the raised lip having a comparatively-sharp edge. To draw off the contents, the bottle is pressed down into the holder a, so that the cork f is forced in by the plug c. The liquid can then flow out through the passage in the plug to the spout j. A wather d prevents escape around the plug, and the plug may in addition have a covering of cork &c. In the case of beer or other effervescent liquid, the pressure in the bottle forces out the contents, but in the case of such a liquid as still wine air must be admitted. The flow of liquid may in such a case be controlled by regulating admission of air, by means of a screw stopper for instance. The holder rotates on its stand, and recesses may be formed in the base to hold a suitable number of glasses. In a modification, the stem of the holder is telescopic and contains a fixed central rod. The bottle is pressed down against the action of a spring, which raises it again after the central rod has forced in the cork.
