Abstract

23,894. Harris, C. G., and McNutt, J. F. Nov. 30. Feeding sheets; rotary machines.-Relates to means for feeding sheets or cards &c. and to means for throwing out the impression cylinder when no sheet is fed as described in Specifications Nos. 4177 and 4176, A.D. 1897. Fig. 1 shows in perspective part of a printing-machine, of which a is the impression cylinder having stops a<2> to which the sheets &c. are fed by rotating discs or rollers on shafts 1, B. The shaft 1 carrying the upper feed-discs 2, 3 is stationary, and the part b of the shaft B carrying the lower discs 4, 5 is journalled in sliding bars 6 movable in guides 7 of a frame 8 supported by a cross-bar 9 of the frame A. The shaft B is in sections connected by universal joints b<1>, b<2>, which permit of up and down movement of the part b. At their lower ends the bars 6 are pivoted to the ends of arms 10, 11 loose on a shaft 12. Adjacent to the arms 10, 11 are arms 17, 18, fixed on the shaft 12, which engage between lateral lugs on the arms 10, 11, a spring being interposed between the upper lug of the arm 10 or 11 and the arm 17, or 18, and an adjusting-screw provided in the lower lug. As the shaft 12 is rocked by the arm 25 and cam 23, on the shaft 26 of the cylinder a, it lifts the discs 4; 5 into contact with the discs 2, 3, nipping the sheet &c. through the pressure of the springs, so that the discs may yield to inequalities in thickness of the material being fed. When no sheet is fed to the discs, the cylinder a is lowered by its eccentric bearings rocked by the arms 29, connected by rods 30 to arms 31 of a shaft 32. On the rock shaft 12 is a loose arm 37 having a notch or detent normally engaging a nose or detent 35 on a collar 36 of the shaft 32. The arm 37 has a projection engaging between lugs on a fixed arm 39, the lugs being so far apart that they do not operate the arm 37 in the normal operations of the machine. Also engaging between the lugs of the arm 39 is a lateral projection of a lever 44, having a slot and pin connection 43 with a lever 41 one end of which acts as a feeler against a grooved roller 49 on the shaft 1 between the discs 2, 3. When a sheet &c. is fed, the lever 41 moves the lever 44, so that its lateral projection is withdrawn from between the lugs on the arm 39, but when no sheet is fed the projection remains between the lugs and the arm 37 releases the shaft 32 which is then turned by the spring 33 to lower the cylinder a.
