Abstract

147,682. American Multigraph Co., (Assignees of Trundle, G. T.). July 27, 1914, [Convention date]. Tripping and like arrangements.-A printing- machine, of the kind in which letters &c. are printed from type set in a drum which prints through an ink-ribbon and coacts with an impression roller and an automatic, or hand, sheetfeeding device, is constructed with eccentric bearings for the impression roller and spring means which tend to rotate the bearings to throw this roller out of printing position, this spring means being normally restrained by a latch which releases it if the sheet is not fed. As shown, a sheet P is fed by hand, or by automatic means, to spring-raised stops 65, which are depressed when a sectional feed-roll 55 is also depressed into contact with a roll 52 bv a cam 60 acting on a roller 59 on a lever 58, the cam 60 being carried by a printing-drum 10 co-operating with an im. pression roller 20. This roller is mounted on a spindle 21 fitted with eccentric journals as 23, Fig. 6, the one opposite to the journal 23 being mounted in an eccentric bush which can be adjusted to alter the inclination of the roller 20. The journal 23 is mounted in a bush 25 in the machine frame 15, and is connected to a spiral spring 70 which tends to rotate the spindle 21 in a direction to trip the roller 20. The journal 23 is fitted with an end-plate 40 shaped as shown in Fig. 2, and this plate is connected in an adjustable manner to a collar 41, which is formed with recesses 82, 97, Fig. 2, to receive latches 80, 96 respectively. The latch 96 is held in engagement with its notch 97 by the circumferential pressure of the straight edge of the notch on the latch, and by the action of the notch or pawl 80. Periodically, the latch 96 is released from both of these by the swinging of the pawl 80 to the right by means of a cam 88 acting on a roller 87 on a lever arm fixed to the shaft of the arm carrying the pawl 80. At this instant, if no sheet is being fed, the latch 96 is raised to permit rotation of the collar 41 and the eccentric bearings of the impression cylinder by a counterweighted lever 92 connected by an extension 94 and a screw 99 and spring 98 to the latch 96. The presence of a sheet, however, prevents the lever 92 from moving by acting on a finger 91 carried by the lever 92, and the latch 96 fails to release the impression tripping- device. The printing-machine, or the paper feed, may be simultaneously tripped by a screw 108 on the collar 41 acting on a projection 106 on a rod 105, which'is moved to throw out the drive of the machine or of the feeding-device. The cams 88 and 60 are preferably carried by a common ring adjustable relatively to the printing-drum. The impression cylinder is driven from the printing- drum by an Oldham coupling 31 and a gear-wheel 30, Fig. 6, mounted on an extension of the bushing 25 in which the journal 23 is mounted.
