Abstract

Feedwater, purifying.- Oily matters are removed by passing the previouslyheated water through a chamber containing zinc to decompose and precipitate the fatty acids, the precipitated matter being afterwards removed by filtration. The precipitation vessel, Fig. 2, consists of a casing containing a removable vessel b, having a perforated bottom, which is filled with fragments of zinc. The vessel b makes a tight joint with the ledge g. It is surrounded by a steam-heating coil d. Water enters at h, rises among the heating-tubes, and descends through the vessel b into the chamber 22, in which some of the precipitate is retained. Escaping at n, the water then passes to a filter constructed, as shown in Fig. 3, of a series of concentric filtering-diaphragms q, q, each composed of layers of jute and paper surrounding a perforated cylinder, and protected if necessary by a covering of wire gauze. The diaphragms are mounted in discs r, s, the lower of which makes a tight joint with the ledge t. The water enters the filter at k and escapes at 11. Two filters are preferably combined with one precipitation chamber, so that one may be in use while the other is being cleansed. Suitable pipe connections and steam blow - out fittings are provided.
