Abstract
17,715. Johnson, J. H., and Weeks, W. R. Sept. 1. Lifts; safety suspending or retaining apparatus.- Relates to means (1) for automatically or by hand operating a cut-out switch in an electric lift when the speed becomes excessive or when the cage is raised too high, and (2) for arresting the cage by hand or automatically when the lifting-rope breaks or when other similar accidents happen. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the cage is suspended by a rope wound round a drum e' driven by an electric motor f<1>, to which the current is supplied through a cut-out switch l. Under ordinary conditions the lift is controlled by a pull-rope k<1> operating the reversing-switch h<1>. The cut-out switch is operated by a rope m<1> secured to a rod v moving in guides w and carrying near its upper end a stop v<1>, which is struck by a piece v<2> on the cage when the latter reaches the upper extremity of its movement. A governor s<2>, driven by a weighted rope, when the speed becomes excessive, actuates a clamp q which grips the rope m<1> and actuates the cut-out switch to stop the cage. This cut-out switch can also be actuated by a handclamp in the cage which grips the rope m'. One guide is made in hinged sections s', which, should the cage break away, are forced inwards to arrest it in the manner described below. These sections s<1> are operated by screws e, Fig. 3, rotated in the manner shown by a drum m round which is wound a rope n. A governor s<3>, Fig. 1, is driven by a weighted rope y, and, when the speed of the cage becomes excessive, actuates a clamp which grips the rope n and rotates the drum m to actuate the sections s<1> and stop the cage. A hand-clamp in the cage may also be used to grip the rope and actuate the safety gear.
