Making toothed gearing. - Worm and screw wheels of different diameters and with teeth of any inclination are cut in a machine by employing one worm milling-cutter only. Fig. 3 shows by way of comparison such a cutter used for cutting a spur wheel. The wheel and cutter are continuously rotated, and the cutter is gradually advanced in the direction of the axis of the spurwheel. In cutting a worm-wheel as in Fig. 5, it is necessary in effect for the cutter to move in a helical path around the cylindrical surface of the wheel, but by this invention such a movement is avoided ; the cutter moves in the direction of the axis of the wheel, as in cutting spur gearing, and it is given an extra turning movement in lieu of a movement around the periphery of the wheel. Figs. 9 and 10 show the gear-cutting machine. The wheel b to be cut is turned at a suitable speed by spur and worm gearing e,f, g, while the cutter is rotated by the pinions i, k, the latter carried on an arm on and driving the shaft q, and gearing r, s, t. The extra rotation is given to the cutter by turning the pinion n, in which the epicyclic pinion k works, through gearing y, z, o, p, by means of the screw v, which moves the cutter across the face of the wheel.
