Abstract

15,642. Begas, R. July 31. Endless-band propellers.-Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show an endless-band propeller which may be placed in a recess in the vessel's bottom or at the side. Two horizontal shafts 1, 4 each carry a pair of sprocketwheels on which the chains 5, 5 run. Paddies on floats 6, 6, pivoted to the chains at suitable distances apart, are slotted at 8 to clear a guide-rail 10 of I-section on which guide-rollers 9, 9 on the floats run. The guide-rail is much nearer the upper than the lower limbs of the chains, so that, during the forward portion of their movement, the floats move edgewise. When the propellers are arranged at the sides of the vessel, the upper limbs of the chains are usually above the water, but, when the propeller is placed in a recess in the hull, the upper limbs of the chains are submerged.
