The crank axle C is geared with a countershaft D, which is connected by a flexible shaft F with the rear axle L, on which the driving-wheel is fixed. The flexible shaft is formed of links connected by pieces with two pairs of pins at right-angles, or by other forms of universal joints. The links &c. may be mounted to turn in ball bearings, and are enclosed by the rear stay N, which forms a gear case.
