The valve disc V is formed with a flange which dips into an annular seating W containing mercury or other suitable sealing-liquid. An external cooling- channel K may be employed when heated gases pass through the valve. An opening P is provided through which the valve seating may be cleaned. The chamber S has baffles F and a cleaning-opening 0, for use when ashes &c. may be carried by the gas.
