Abstract
276. Parker, D. E. Jan. 3. Liquid raised up to solid; purifying gases.- An apparatus to be used by physicians for generating oxygen gas comprises a bell 2 mounted in a chamber 1 and provided with a diaphragm 22 on which a suitable material is placed which generates gas on contact with the water in the vessel. The solid is charged through a plug 15, through which passes a bent rod 37 for agitating the material. The bell is screwed into a closure 4 for the chamber 1, and this closure is screwed to the rim of the chamber either by a thread 7 formed on it as shown in Fig. 1, or by a separate threaded portion 11 secured to it as shown in Fig. 3. Gas is withdrawn through a tube 24, and is passed in succession through two washers 25 formed integral with the chamber. To enable a large quantity of gas to be produced, the chamber 1 is arranged so that an air pressure may be exerted on the surface of the liquid, and this is effected by an air-pump 35. The diaphragm 22 supporting the solid rests on a split ring so that it may be placed in any position in the bell.
