Abstract
7066. Young, D., [Vaughn Machine Co.]. April 4. Extracts.-Relates to leaching-apparatus especially adapted for leaching tan bark. For this purpose the tan bark is enclosed in a rotating drum and subjected to the action of heat and water &c., which results in the extraction of the tannin. The drum a is provided with journals a<1>, a', mounted in bearings, and has a partition wall a<3> which separates it into a leaching-chamber a<4> and a liquor chamber a<5>. The leaching-chamber a' is provided with a number of liquor outlets a<7>, consisting of walls a<10>, a<11>, Fig. 2, closed at the top by a strainer consisting of V-shaped bars a<13>. The outlet passages a<7> discharge into the chamber a<5> through holes a<25> in the partition wall a<3>. The chamber a<4> is provided with a liquid inlet consisting of a pipe b<3>, with perforations b<4>, which is supported by a frame b<5> attached to the wall a<3>. The chamber is heated by steam which enters through a pipe b<7> coupled to a fitting b<10>. Branch circulating pipes b<13>, b<19>, b<21>, b<23>, &c. pass from the fitting b<10> and through the chamber, and the steam is finally exhausted through a pipe b<25>. The steam pipes passing through stuffing-boxes b<24>, b<26> are free to turn therein, so that the heating-apparatus may revolve with the drum. Safety-valves d, each controlled by a spring d<1>, are connected to the chamber a<5>, and are adapted to be operated by an actuating- device such as a bar d<5> during the revolution of the drum. The wall a<3> may be provided with a manhole, and the leaching-chamber is preferably provided with two manholes closed by doors d<12>. In operation, the drum is charged with tan bark, and water or leaching-liquor is admitted. Steam is then circulated through the heating-pipes, and the drum is set in motion by any suitable means, such as chain gearing. The walls of the strainers form lifters for raising the bark. The liquid extract which flows into the chamber a<5> is pumped out through the pipes b, b<1>.
