Abstract

2770. Burrell, H. Feb. 7. Ships' hulls. - Relates to the construction of vessels for carrying grain, coal, and the like, oil, timber, cattle, or other cargoes. The engines and boilers are placed in the after end of the vessel, which is provided with a trunk of about one-third of her beam in width and extending nearly from end to end. Large hatchways are provided in the trunk which are served by a large number of cranes. Vessels such as described may be employed to coal, or supply fresh water to, a fleet at sea. The officers' quarters are placed in a poop D, Fig. 1, over which is a hood D<1> to protect the steering- gear &c., and the mens' quarters are placed in a forecastle. The trunk T extends from this forecastle to the point X under the hood D<1>, and has in it a number of large hatchways G', G<2>, &c. The vessel shown has seven hatchways, which are served by nine cranes, six on the starboard and three on the port side, all of which can discharge on either side of the ship. In front of the boiler room BR is a transverse b u n k e r C, which may extend forward to the bulkhead WT<3>, or to any intermediate p o i n t. The vessel is strengthened by two sets of pillars P, P<1> respectively. The one set P<1> extend up to the lower deck only when they are connected to fore and aft girders K, while the other set extend up to the main deck, and are connected to the beams by gusset-plates P<2> as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Above these pillars P web plates M are riveted to the dusk beams and the sides and top of the trunk. At the edges next hatchways and at their middles these web plates are strengthened by angle-irons. At the ends of the hatchways central pillars P<3> are placed. Fig. 13 shows a cross-section of the pillars. In Figs. 5 and 6, the dotted line shows the stern of the deck F. Transverse or longitudinal cargo-boards can be secured to the pillars in the manner shown in Fig. 13. A water-ballast tank is provided in the fore-peak, and others at the after end of the vessel by means of which the vessel can be trimmed as the coal is burnt. Cargo ports H are provided in the betweendecks, the doors of which form hoppers and shoots when open as shown in Figs. 8. Small trimming-hatchways are provided in the lower deck opposite these ports, as shown in Fig. 8.
