Abstract

1875. Lentz, H. Jan. 26. Compound engines; valves and valve gear.-The trunk piston E, reciprocating the connecting-rod D, has valve-controlled openings 7 and 8 which place the chambers 5 and 6 in communication, and open the chamber 6 to exhaust, respectively. When the piston is nearest the crank 1, steam is admitted to the chamber 5 by the valve 15, rotated from an eccentric on the shaft 2, and the chamber 6 exhausts to the closed crank chamber 3 and pipe 4. When the piston is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the inlet port 16 is closed, and the extension 11 of the connecting-rod shifts the pivoted valve 9 to open the port 7 and close the passage 8 so that steam from the chamber 5 expands in the chamber 6, and operating on the maximum area of the piston E drives it back. By removing the valve 15 the engine works non-expansively.
