Abstract
24,771. Lanchester, F. W. Nov. 23. Gases, obtaining.-Relates to apparatus for obtaining gases, such as acetylene, by chemical reaction, the essential feature being the use of a vapour instead of a liquid to induce the reaction. In Fig. 1, a fan F causes any air or gas present in the apparatus to pass through a chamber A.. partly filled with water or other liquid and containing a spongy or porous material presenting a large evaporative surface. The air or gas is forced in a moistened condition through a chamber B, entering beneath a perforated tray C which supports a quantity of carbide. The moisture acts upon the carbide, and acetylene is generated, dried by the excess carbide, and passes away. It may be drawn off for use at any suitable outlet, such as I. A portion of the gas circulates back to the reservoir A, is again moistened, and so on. To render the process automatic, a diaphragm valve I<1>, J is introduced in the tube D, to close the passage when the pressure is excessive, whereby any further circulation ceases until the pressure again falls. In a modification, the tubes D and E are arranged vertically, the chamber A being above, and the chamber B below. In this case the circulation is caused by the difference in temperature of the dry and the moistened gases. The ascending pipe may be heated to assist the circulation. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the gas passes alternately through a moistening-chamber A<1> and a carbide chamber B<1>.
