Furthermore, in the known feed water degassing apparatus special regulating arrangements are required, which, when the apparatus is used on ships,whichare never quite steady, do not always operate-satisfactorily and are also otherwise undesirable on board ship.
Through the invention a feed water degassing apparatus is provided, in which the heating surface is utilized to advantage and in which, even with a fluctuating water supply, the quantity of heating steam is not regulated] The heating steam is therefore no longer throttled as hitherto, when the water supply is small, through the action of a regulator disposed in front of the degassing apparatus, but the heating steam accumulates without regulation in the degassing apparatus, more or less condensation taking place according to the amount of feed water running through. v
The invention is illustrated by way of example in section in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a view in vertical section through'a diagrammatic representation of the degassing apparatus according to the invention and Fig. 2 a similar view, but only in part section, through another constructional form of the degassing apparatus according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, l is a tube through which heating steam is fed to a degassing apparatus 2; 3 is a tube through which the condensate produced from the heating steam is discharged; 4 is supplied with feed water through a pipe 5; 6 are heating tubesj and i is a tank for receiving degassed water. 7
For conveying the feed water from the chamber t into the heating tubes 6 spraying nozzles, for
" instance in the form of short perforated lengths of tubing 8 which are closed at the bottom are provided, which therefore have small distributing perforations in them and extend with their perforated parts into the heating tubes. The tubes 8 are secured in a bottom tube plate 9 (for example, by being expanded in) which is disposed a short distance above a further bottom tube plate 19, provided for the reception of the heating tubes 6. At their lower ends the heating tubes 6 are in communication with thawster collecting tank "i. This connection may be carried out in different ways. In a specially suitable way the heating tubes 6 extend into a basket l 5 charged with contact material, which is in communication with the tank 1 through the holes I? in the side wall of the'basket II. From the steam space of the'collecting chamber '1 where the steam from basket ll collects, a'vapour pipe it leads to a'vapour branch l3 which is secured" in the upper tube'plate 9; 5
Through the contact material in the basket the degassing of the water in the 'tube 6 is improved, that is to say, without the contact material the heating surface (tubes 6) and the quantity of water to beievaporate'd would have to be greater. 10
A bottom'cover M of the basket I l for the contact material is removable and'is for this reasonprovided with-a gland I 5.
The diameters of the vapour pipe 12 and of the vapour'bran'ch 53 are made such that a space I6 is left between them, the'purpose' of which will bedescribed hereinafter.
Briefly the degassingapparatu's according to the inventionoperates as follows:
The water to be degassed flows down within the 0 heating tubes 6'bei'ng heated by the condensing heating vapour and in part vaporized. The steam flows with the water through the lateral holes I? in the basket H into the collecting tank L The steam together withthe noxious gases that have been separated out then passes through the :vapour tube I2 into the vapour branch I3, no water being carried alongby the steam.
In order that air shall not collect in the upper part of'the heating tubes 6, the space l8 between the tube'plates G and I0 communicates with the vapour branch !3 byway of the narrowspace I6: formed around tube i2.
To accommodate the apparatus in the feed water circuit it isadv'antageously placed between the two waste steam pipes (not shown) which are under higher and lower pressures, such pipes being usually provided on board ship. The pipe l is thus secured to the waste steam pipe which is under the higher pressure and the vapour branch [3 to thelower pressure. As there is'relatively little steam emitted through the vapour branch, the volume of waste steam at low pressure is not unduly increased; it is advantageously condensed as usual in the corresponding low pressure preheater or the jet steam condenser, the gases separated out in the degassing apparatus leaving through the air tube ofthe low pressure preheater or jet steam condenser.
By the invention the-special advantage is attained, that the heating surface is utilized to good purpose and'that there is a complete absence of regulating elements which are objected to on board ship for reasons of safety in use.

If there is no economically useful possibility of condensing the degassing apparatus vapours, the degassingapparatus according to Fig.- 2 may be provided with a vapour condenser. This condenser consists of a chamber l9 which is bounded for instance by a tube plate 20, an end 2| and a cylindrical wall 22 which supports the water inflow branch 5. In the plate 20 perforated tubes 23 are secured, through which aportion of the water to be degassed is sprayed'into the water The bulk of the feeding water is supplied to the water chamber through the slotted tubes 24.
This dividing up of the flow of water through the perforated tubes 23 and the slotted tubes 24 has the object of preventing a vacuum being formed, owing to a' too great cooling of the vapour, which might interfere with the degassing process.
What I claim is:
L'Asurface feedrwater degassing apparatus more particularly for use on board ship, consisting'of a casing with a heating steam inlet opening and a condensate outlet opening, upright heating tubes in the casing, a tube plate at the upper ends of the heating tubes for securing the heating tubes, a second tube plate above the first tube plate and at a distance from the latter, spraying nozzles supported by said second tube plate in the upper ends of the heating tubes for conveying the feed water to the inside surfaces of the heating tubes, a vapour opening in the upper tube plate for conveying away-the gases between the two tube plates, a water chamber with an inlet openingabove the upper tube plate, a
water collecting chamber below the casing, a basket containing contact material disposed at the lower end of the heating tubes, the basket being open towards said tubes and having outlets in communication with the water collecting chamber and avap'our pipe in the lower tube plate of smaller diameter than the vapour opening, the
