Hides and skins, tanned or tawed, treating.-Relates to a machine for removing the flesh and refuse from skins and hides by passing them between an abrading and a pressure roll. The skins are fed from a table 21 between feed-rollers 22,23, of which the former is grooved in the manner shown in Fig. 3 in order to stretch the skin transversely. The smooth roller 23 is pressed by the spring 31 against the positively-driven roller 22, but can be withdrawn from it by means of a treadle-lever to which the rods 30 are attached. The skin passes the guide-plates 47 and 48, roll 40, which may be formed in short sections, and guide-plate 49, and finally is subjected on the flesh side to the action of a high-speed abrading-roll 2 against which is pressed the elastic-surfaced and slow-speed pressure roll 6, mounted in bearings on bars 8 pivoted at 9. The same pedal which operates the rod 30 is employed for withdrawing the pressure roll from the abrading-roll. A brush 52 cleans the pressure roll, and a scraper keeps the abrading-surface free from refuse &c. A suction box placed below the operative parts receives the refuse, the skin being prevented from entering it by a wire guard &c.
