Abstract

16,166. Schettler, G. A. July 30. Hides and skins, raw and tanned or tawed, treating.-In a machine for shaving, whitening, buffing, skiving, fluffing, setting, or the like, the work is presented to the cylindrical tool by being passed over a narrow roller, the feed being effected by power-driven rollers which grip the hide between them. The narrow bed-roll 10 is carried by a bracket 14 at the top of a pivoted lever 4 below a work rest 46, so that depression of the treadle 6 brings a narrow strip of the hide into contact with the tool 2. The roll 10, as shown in Fig. 3, is journalled in a fork 12, which is mounted on ballbearings at 13 in the frame 14 so as to adapt itself to inequalities in the thickness of the hide against the action of restoring-springs 16. It may be iigidly locked by set-screws 17. The frame 14 also carries the bearings 20 of the feed-roll 18, which is driven by a chain 23 from a sprocketwheel 25 and gear-wheels 34, 35 driven from the power-wheel 31. The second feed-roll 19, which is driven by a chain 27, is carried by levers 21 swinging about the axis of the tool 2 on links 36 and coupled by an elbow-lever 37 to a rod 39, which rests on the counterweight 40 of the treadle 6. Depression of the treadle thus causes the rollers 18, 19 to grip the work and draw it over the bed-roll 10 in contact with the tool. To enable the feed-rolls to be moved independently of the tool, the rod 39 is linked to an auxiliary pedal 44, depression of which draws the rod 39 off the counterweight 40. The feed-rolls, which are mounted so as to leave clear openings at their ends to accommodate work of any width, are preferably formed of rubber rings slightly separated from one auother.
