Cots.-The side and end frames of cots which are capable of sliding up and down are provided with grooved rollers D which run on corresponding beads on the pillars ; or the frames are made to telescope on or in the pillars. The frames are held in position by catches E, which enter holes b in the pillars and are disengaged by lifting the slotted rod F so that only one hand is required to disengage the catches and raise and lower the frame. The catches may be arranged on the bottom rail, the handle F<1> being connected to the operating-bar F by a vertical. Figs. 4 and 5 show modifications. In Fig. 4, the rods E<1> operating the catches are pressed apart by springs f<2> on the rod F<2> which pass through eyes on the rods E<1> and through a hole g in a fixed bar G. When the handle F<1> is raised, the springs f are forced together and the catches are withdrawn. In Fig. 5, inclined parts f<3>, when the handle F<1> is raised, act on eyes and draw the rods E<1> together against the action of a spring f<4>. In Fig. 7, the side frames are raised on pulling a cord h<2> or pressing a treadle H<2> on a lever H pivoted at h and engaging a rod H<3> bearing under the side frames ; the pivoted weighted or spring pawl K engage, a notch of a rack J, being pushed aside as the frame rises or falls by the parts j, j<1> of the rack.
