Abstract

20,681. MacIvor, R. W. E., and Spencer, T. F. Sept. 30. Chromium oxide.-The sesquioxide is made from chrome iron ore by grinding it very finely, and heating the powder to a bright red heat in hydrogen or water gas, in a chamber which rotates, or is provided with stirring-apparatus. After from two to four hours, the iron in the ore is reduced to metal, and the material is allowed to cool in the hydrogen or water gas. It is then transferred to vats in which the iron and some impurities are dissolved in dilate sulphuric, hydrochloric, or other acid. The residual chromium sesquioxide is washed with hot acid, and dried.
