In the form shown, a special casting E screws into the hollow spike, and in recesses therein are secured by screws J three springs H, the upper inturned edges of which grip a nipple or stud D, the other end of which screws into the wood A, passing through a metal strengthening-plate B secured to the wood by screws C. In a modification, the springs are secured within the lower end of the wood stump. while the stud is secured to a metal cap screwed into the hollow spike.
