To open a valve rapidly, and to avoid the excessive strain on the gear produced by the operation, a resilient valve lever is employed. In Fig. 1, a flat spring C on the lever B is gradually pressed against the exhaust-valve stem A until the pressure is sufficient to overcome the pressure in the cylinder, or until the spring is pressed against the set-screw E, when the valve is suddenly opened. A spiral spring may be substituted for the flat spring. The invention is particularly applicable to large engines.
