Sewage and foul waters, treating; settling.- Suspended matters are removed from sewage and trade effluents, before filtering or running the liquid into adjacent streams, by means of the settling-plant shown in plan in Fig. 3. The sewage &c. flows along a channel a, provided with a floating skimmer a<1>, for directing the floating matter into a bye-pass b, and with partitions d of suitable shape and material for directing the solids towards the bottom of the channel a, which communicates with a chamber c. The liquid flows over an adjustable door f, which also assists in separating the suspended matters and conducts them into the chamber c. The solids, accumulating in the chamber c, are removed by the perforated buckets g of an elevator j. The door f may be used for shutting off the sewage from the chamber c, when required.
