The spindles of the rollers J run in open gaps in the periphery of the cage I, I<3>, secured upon the shaft B which passes out through a stuffing- box in the closed end of the drum A. The drum is further supported on rollers C ; it is formed with a surface a for a driving-belt whereby it is rotated slowly and in the opposite direction to the rollers ; it is provided with a lining A<3> on which mercury troughs may be formed ; the working surfaces may be corrugated. The open end of the drum is fitted with a screen F and a discharge lip G. The feed-pipe H passes through the centre of the screen, and, in the case of wet grinding, Fig. 5, is provided with a branch for the water supply. As arranged for dry grinding, Fig. 1, the drum is extended to form a chamber for a fan K secured upon the shaft B, which may itself be made hollow to serve as an air-supply pipe; the discharge lip fits into a chamber M provided with an adjustable mouth-plate M<2> under which the pulverized ore is blown into a chamber L having a series of hoppers L', one side L<2> of each of which is adjustable, in which the material is deposited according to its weight. The feeding-device consists of a paddlewheel, rotated in a closed chamber by means of a ratchet-wheel and a pawl on a lever which is swung in one direction by a pin on the drum and in the other by a weight which returns it into contact with an adjustable stop.
