Abstract
10,716. Lyon, J. P. May 10. Stoppers.-Relates to jars for preserving fruit, vegetables, &c., the covers or stoppers being held in position by atmospheric pressure after the air has been exhausted from the vessel by boiling the contents. The top of the jar is formed with a rib c, on which the packing-washer g is placed. The cover F is formed with a flange f, the inner surface f' of which is flared outwardly and downwardly, so forming, with the cylindrical neck of the jar, a tapered annular recess into which the washer is forced by the external pressure. The cover is released by forcing a knife or other instrument, through the notch e in the rib, between the flange f and the washer. In the form shown, the flange f bears on the rib c, while, in a modification, the flange does not bear on the rib, but the under surface of the cover bears on the mouth of the jar, to prevent the contents from coming in contact with the washer. In another modification, the notch e is formed of the same depth as the rib, so that, during the cooking process, the washer is depressed into the notch, to afford a freer outlet for the escaping gases.
