Abstract

9387. Thompson, J. April 23. Stoppers; stoppering; stopper-keys &c.-Relates to means for hermetically sealing bottles, jars, cans, boxes, or other receptacles used for preserving or containing food, seeds, vegetables, tobacco, &c. The cover A, which is held in place by the atmospheric pressure after cooking, or exhausting the contained air from the vessel, may consist of a float disc or lid, but is preferably of dished form, with a depending flange A<3>, as shown. A sheet B of foil or other suitable material formed with perforations b, or of a suitable porous material, is placed over the mouth of the vessel, forming a chamber A' with the cover, so that the contained air, or gases generated during the cooking &c., can escape through the sheet B, then between this sheet and the packing washer C, and finally through perforations a in the flange or top of the cover. When the cover is made of corrodible material, a second sheet D of foil &c. is interposed between it and the sheet B. The washer C may in some cases be dispensed with, the cover being then formed with a thickened edge or rim, to maintain the space A<4> between it and the sheet B. Fig. 6 shows a suitable apparatus for use to hold the covers in position during the process of cooking &c. A block F is placed on the cover of the vessel, on which it is held by the studs or projections F'. The vessel is placed on a base provided with uprights G', which are hooked at their upper ends to engage with the plate G'. The plate G<4> may be resilient and adapted to bear on the block F, or a spring H may be interposed between them, as shown. A number of vessels may be superposed during cooking &c., the spring H or the plate G<4> then bearing on the block F of the uppermost vessel. Fig. 5 shows a suitable tool J for opening the vessels, the pointed end J<2> being inserted through one of the holes a in the cover, and manipulated to break the vacuum. The upper side of the cover may be formed with an annular lip or flange, adapted, when the cover is reversed, to fit tightly inside the mouth of the vessel.
