Abstract

10,454. Kelly, B. J. May 7. Points and switches operated from railway vehicles &c. The pivoted rails 5 connected to a plate 8 are thrown to one side or the other by the arm 12 of a three-armed lever which is connected by cords &c. 29, 31, 40 to levers 23, 32, 41 placed between the rails of the main line and sidings. The ends of these levers project through the sides of open-topped boxes 26, 36, 45 into which an arm can be lowered from the vehicle or locomotive so as to operate the points. On the plate 8 connecting the tongues are mounted two bolts 21 which are operated by projections on the arm 12 of the three-armed lever acting through bell cranks 17. Suitable means, such as are indicated at 69, can be used for operating the points by hand. The appliance on the vehicles &c. for knocking over the levers 23, 32, 41 is shown in Fig. 3. It consists of a frame 53, pivoted at 50, which is normally lifted by the counterweight 65, but can be lowered by the handle 62 and locked in that position by a bolt 58. This bolt is connected by a bell crank 57 to a second pivoted frame 55, so that it is liberated when this frame strikes tops 46, 47, or 48 in the roadway.
