Abstract

9516. BollÚe, A. April 25. Motor road vehicles, driving-gear for. On the driving-shaft A is mounted a stepped pulley G<1>, G<2>, G<3>, G<4>, and on the driven shaft a series of fast pulleys F<1>, F<2>, F<3> of different diameters and stepped loose pulleys M', M<2>, M<3>, M<4>. The belt D runs between V- shaped forks a, b and c, d which are guided along oblique l i n e s x-y and u-v. If the forks are moved to the left from the position shown, the belt is moved on to the loose pulley M<2> and at first hangs over the edge of the pulley G<2> and then drops on the pulley G<3> so that its tension is relieved ; the propelling side d of the fork c, d being further away from the pulley face than the side b of the fork a, b, it has less effect upon the belt than the latter, and the belt does not rise up the step of the loose pulley until further pressure is brought to bear, when it mounts to the larger diameter again, thus straining the belt preparatory to moving it on to the fast pulley F<3>. When the belt is moved on to the loose pulley M<4>, its tension is relieved and the transmission of motion ceases. The driving- shaft may have pulleys like those of the driven shaft, and the pulley G<4> may run loose upon the bearing of the shaft A, but may be capable of being pressed laterally against the fast pulley so as to partake of its motion. The cones may in some cases be movable axially, and clutches may be employed in conjunction with them. The sides of the pulleys may be faced with rubber, or formed with spiral grooves &c. to facilitate the mounting of the belt.
