Abstract

6387. Peach, C., [Johnston, A.]. March 16. Milling.-In a machine for milling the bolsters of knives, or other cutlery or articles, the cutter E, Figs. 1 and 4, is carried by a spindle D mounted in a block C, pivoted at c in a longitudinal recess in a cylinder B. The cylinder is slowly rotated in a casing A<2> by annular differential gearing G, g, I<2> driven from fast and loose pulleys K, K' mounted on a shaft H rotating in the cylinder. The cutter spindle is driven by pinions d, h from the shaft H. The casing A<2> is mounted on a suitable pedestal A'. The knife X is clamped between jaws S, S' on a plate R and adjusted by a gauge U, its blade projecting into a slot C' in the block C. The plate R is carried by a spindle M mounted in an arm L on the casing, and having a lever N with a hooked end n<1>. The lever N is moved by a treadlelever &c. P in connection with the belt fork Q. When the machine is started by shifting the belt to the pulley K, the lever N is depressed and held by a spring latch. This brings the bolster into contact with the cutter and the cylinder B makes one revolution, milling the edge and cutting the groove in the bolster. A lug on the cylinder end then releases the latch, the lever N is thrown up by a spring o, and the machine stopped. The cutter is formed to suit the particular shape required, and has a plain disc E<1> which revolves in contact with the knife handle or a pattern placed on the tang. This determines the pattern, and irregularities are allowed for by supporting the block C on its pivot by a spring c' fixed on the cylinder B, which yields to prevent excessive removal of material. Fig. 5 shows a machine for milling the curved surface of the bolster. The knives 18 are clamped in position on a work-holder 5 carried by a worm-wheel 10, rotating on a standard 3. The cutters 23, 24 are carried by spindles 26, mounted in blocks 32, 33, pivoted at 34 in a casing 6 and pressed together by springs 44. The work-holder is rotated by a worm shaft and carries the knives successively between the cutters. Guiding-discs 30, 31 are fixed to the cutters as before, and the springs 44 yield to prevent excessive removal of material. The cutter spindles are driven by bevel gearing from a fast and loose pulley shaft 40. Slight modifications may be made in the arrangement of the cutters and work-holder.
